Coming from the Mill is one of British artist L.S. Lowry’s most famous works, and it’s captured here in perfect miniature detail. Lancashire-born Lowry is known for his depictions of working-class northern life, compete with “matchstick men” and imposing industrial buildings. This painting was completed in 1930, and now hangs in the Lowry Gallery Salford. The rectangular box is made in Bilston, famous for being the heart of British enamelling craft. The box is made from copper with an enamel coating, a technique that brings out Lowry’s rich and contrasting shades. The box has a gilt rim and brown base that complements the painting’s tones.
